Drunk Driving Kills Again

Posted by David on Jul 31 2008 | Accidents

Can’t say I’m suprised, another idiot drunk driver. Story reported by cbs.

Police believe alcohol may have played a part in an accident that killed a local sailor. Authorities say a car was on Sky Harbor Road Wednesday night, when it suddenly hit a group of people. The car trapped one man who had to be rescued by emergency crews. He later died. Police have not identified the man, but say he was a 20-year-old sailor aboard the USS Nimitz. After the crash, officers say the driver also became a victim. “Several other friends of the decedent got visibly upset… And they took some physical action. They did drag the driver out of the vehicle and he was beaten,” said Sergeant Kevin Friedman with the San Diego Police Department. The 27-year old driver was taken to the hospital. He will face felony DUI charges. Police arrested three men on suspicion of battery. It’s still unclear if the driver intentionally plowed into the crowd.

Driving intentionally into a crowd? Is it me or does it seem like people just care less today. Truthfully if I was there I might have been part of the physical action as well, I can’t stand idiots like this driving.

Trans Fat Ban Passed in California

Posted by David on Jul 30 2008 | Laws

Starting in 2010, trans fat will be not be used in California restaurants. A news release issued by the governors office mentioned “scientific evidence demonstrates a strong association between consumption of artificial trans fat and the development of coronary heart disease and stroke, as well as other chronic conditions such as diabetes.” The legislation signed by Schwarzenegger will take effect January 1, 2010, for oil, shortening and margarine used in spreads or for frying. Restaurants will be able to continue using trans fats to deep fry yeast dough and in cake batter until January 1, 2011. The Findlaw blog has a post on it with links to other news stories.

Trans fats are created by pumping hydrogen into liquid oil at high temperature, a process called partial hydrogenation. The process results in an inexpensive fat that prolongs the shelf life and appearance of packaged foods and that, many fast-food restaurants say, helps make cooked food crisp and flavorful.

Yes, this will help reduce the amount of heart attacks and related deaths by six and 19 percent according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Here’s my question: Is saving lives really worth making us give up the right to chow on that delicious Roberto’s taco shop burrito? Or those delicious carne asada fries? We’re all going to die anyways right? I really love my food cooked in animal fat (lard!). Joking of course. But this will change the way your food tastes so get your trans fat soaked meals in while you can. You have till 2010. The countdown has begun.
