Fallbrook woman pleads not guilty in grandmothers death
A Fallbrook woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday in North County courts to being an accessory in the murder of her grandmother and to a dozen other charges including elder theft and drug possession.
Amy Jo Mitchell, 33, of Fallbrook withdrew approximately $70,000 from bank accounts belonging to her grandmother, Shirley Beggs, 74, and visited Beggs’ apartment twice just days after her murder last year, alleged prosecutors. Officials say they did not find evidence that linked Mitchell to the actual murder.
Authorities say that Mitchell’s boyfriend, Jeff Nolan, had confessed to his stepfather that he was the one who murdered Beggs before taking his own life in Riverside County.
Nolan and Mitchell, who had three children together, believed that several days before the murder Beggs had reported them to Child Protective Services concerning a domestic dispute, said prosecutors.
On Sept. 4, sheriff’s deputies entered Beggs’ apartment and “found her decomposed body stuffed into a dresser that was lying on its side and taped up with masking tape,” according to court records. It was determined that she had died of “sharp force injury to the neck” and strangulation, according to The Medical Examiner’s Office
Judge Adrienne Orfield increased Mitchell’s bail from $364,000 to $500,000 during her arraignment Wednesday. A bail review is set for Feb. 2, and a preliminary hearing for Feb. 4.
