Jury to decide charges in Remund case

An attempted murder charge against a previous power boat racing champion was dropped yesterday, but he was found guilty of arson and threatening to set his stepdaughter and his ex-wife’s houses on fire.

The El Cajon Superior Court jury were stuck in the decision regarding two other charged of premeditated attempted murder for Eugene “Mickey” Remund, who was a participant and champion in the Thunderboat Regatta and was known for driving hydroplanes in the 1970s and ’80s.

Prosecutors were given until Wednesday to determine whether to retry Remund on those charges.

Remund, 76, started a fire in his ex-wife’s garage last June at her home located in Lemon Grove. Gale Remund was not injured in the incident and dialed her daughter, who awakened to catch her home on fire also in Spring Valley.

Remund was seen laying on the ground by his stepdaughter’s house, after he committed suicide by using a nail gun to fire one shot in his head.

Gale Remund and Eugene had been apart since 2006 and Gale had a restraining order against him.
