Office building set on fire by air conditioner in Mission Valley
A air conditioner undergoing problems is thought to be the cause of a fire late Tuesday afternoon at a Mission Valley office building, authorities reported. One woman suffered smoke inhalation as a result.
The blaze was called in around 4:50 p.m. at the three-story building located at 3435 Camino del Rio South, reported San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. The building is located off Interstate 8 and between Interstates 805 and 15.
The blaze started in an office that was left empty. Someone was going to move in on Tuesday, Luque stated.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in an estimated four minutes, but there was still a large amount of damage due to smoke on the second floor, where other offices are located, Luque said.
Around 60 to 70 people were at work in the building during the time of the fire, Luque stated. Everyone was evacuated from the building without a problem besides one woman who was consumed by smoke as she was on her way out. She is expected to survive, he added.
The fire caused damage of about $50,000 to contents inside and $100,000 to the building itself.
Around 35 firefighters were sent to the location. The first crew to show up at the scene witnessed the air condition and carpet in flames, Luque reported.
