Woman commits suicide, jumps off Horton Plaza

A woman who fell off the Horton Plaza building and died was said to be Colleen Marian Conaway, 46, of Park Rapids, Minn., the county Medical Examiner’s Office reported Monday.

Witnesses to the incident informed authorities that they spotted Coaway leap to her death from the third-floor balcony at 1:40 p.m. Saturday.

She fell and hit the sidewalk next to the movie theaters in the downtown mall, San Diego police reported.

Authorities are treating the death as a suicide case. 

Conaway’s cousin, Christie Hobscheidt, informed that Conaway, who was an employee at a dental office, was in San Diego attending a seminar.

Car ignites fire by San Diego Wild Animal Park

About 24 firefighters arrived at  San Pasqual Valley to put out a 2-acre brush fire about 20 minutes after it was started by a car caught on fire, authorities reported. 

The fire was called in around 1:20 p.m. on San Pasqual Valley Road, near Bandy Canyon Road, a few miles east of the San Diego Wild Animal Park, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque reported. No buildings or homes were damaged in the incident and no one was hurt. 

Firefighters battled the flames using one helicopter and five fire engines, Luque stated. Investigators had not discovered what was the source of the fire and what caused the car to blow into flames.

Brush fire threatens homes, over 50 firefighters arrive to fight flames

A brush fire posed a threat to about 24 homes close to a canyon in Encanto yesterday, but they were saved from the fire when two helicopters and 50 firefighters arrived at the scene to battle the flames for about three hours.

The fire began around 10:30 a.m. near Cervantes Avenue and Alta Vista Road and burned over 10 acres, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque reported. 

“There had been some good brush management around some of the homes, but others didn’t and that posed a challenge,” Luque stated.

Investigators are still working to find out what was the source of the fire.

Fire ignites near Camp Pendleton, threatens homes

An estimated 2 acres were consumed by a slow-sweeping brush fire yesterday that posed a small threat to some homes located on Sunset Drive, near San Rafael Way, the Oceanside Fire Department reported. 

The fire, which was close to the Camp Pendleton boundary, was called in around 2 p.m. and was contained about 45 minutes after, a fire department spokesman stated. The source of the fire is being looked into. 

Sixteen firefighters from the Oceanside, Carlsbad and Camp Pendleton fire departments arrived at the scene to fight against the fire. No one had to be evacuated from their home and no one was injured, the spokesman reported.

Boy riding scooter struck by minivan

A 12-year-old boy cruising on his Razor scooter was severely injured when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by a passing minivan Saturday night, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The boy was following behind two other boys were were riding bicycles headed south on Pommel Way. The group of boys came up to the intersection located at Palomarcos Avenue and decided to not stop at the stop sign, officials reported. 

The boys on the bicycles went across the street first and cut in front of a blue minivan traveling west on Palomarcos, making the driver jerk his car around them. The driver did not hit the boys on their bikes, but unfortunately hit the boy riding the scooter behind the others, officials reported. 

The boy was severely injured in his head and left leg. He was airlifted by helicopter and taken to Rady Children’s Hospital, officials stated. His state of his injuries was not given as of last night.

Father and daughter seriously injured in watercraft crash

A 33-year-old man from Escondido and his 11-year-old daughter were severely injured when the watercrafts they were riding crashed into eachother in Mission Bay yesterday, authorities reported. 

The father and daughter were both on the same watercraft when it was hit by another at  10:45 a.m. in the Fiesta Bay area near Ski Beach, Lt. Andy Lerum stated. The driver of the other watercraft was not hurt in the incident.

Both the father and daughter had to be transported to San Diego hospitals. San Diego police were looking into the collision to find out what happened.  

The incident was one out of the total 8 boat rescues that had to be made, 202 medical aid calls and 196 water rescues lifeguards that took place yesterday as a result of the 290,000 people that crowded the  San Diego city beaches, Lerum reported.

Man injures neck and back after diving into shallow water

A man was severely hurt in his neck and back yesterday afternoon after he dove off a high cliff into shallow water and struck his head, San Diego lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum reported. 

The accident took place around 1:30 p.m. near Windandsea Beach, Lerum stated. The man, thought to be about 18 to 20 years old, was transported to a hospital close by for treatment. 

The seriousness of his injuries are not yet known.

Two robbers steal wallet and car keys from customer at motel

A customer staying at a motel in the Morena area called police informing them that they had just been a victim of a robbery yesterday afternoon by two men armed with a knife and threatening him with the weapon, police reported.  

The robbery took place at the EZ-8 motel on Pacific Highway, close to Friars Road, was called in around 5:40 p.m., San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros stated. The customer reported that the two men armed with a knife walked inside his room when his door was left open, and they grabbed his wallet and car keys and took off, Delimitros said. The robbers did not steal his car. No one was injured in the incident. 

According to a description of one robber, he was a white male, around 40-years-old with with blond hair in a pony tail, had a beard and wore blue jeans, Delimitros stated. The other robber was said to be a Latino man, around 30-years-old, was clean-shaven and dressed in a red basketball jersey. Both men looked as if they were homeless, the officer stated.

Fight at party results in stabbing of two men

Two men involved in a fight at a party just a little before midnight Saturday in the North Bay Terraces community received stab wounds. 

The incident was called in at 11:35 p.m. and said to have taken place in the backyard of a home located on Ohara Court near Bullock Drive, San Diego police Sgt. John Steffen reported. 

Witnesses to the incident informed police that an estimated 20 Asian and Latino men started to fight. As the fight escalated, two Asian men, ages 20 and 19, were stabbed by a Latino, authorities stated. 

The 20-year-old was received a stab wound in his upper left side and the other victim was stabbed two times in his back,  Steffen reported.

Both men were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. No one was taken into custody, police stated.

Men tied up at apartment by robbers

Police were looking into a situation in which a caller informed them that someone had broken into their home and robbed them Saturday afternoon at a Hillcrest apartment complex.

The robbery was called in around 3:50 p.m. on Fourth Avenue, near Arbor Drive, San Diego police Sgt. John Steffen reported. A neighbor informed officials that he had heard some noise and approached the apartment next door to check out what was going on. He discovered two men bound by ropes in a hallway , cut them loose and raced back to his apartment to dial the police. 

Upon the arrival of the police, the two tied up were gone, Steffen reported. Police looked around the area and even inside one of the men’s apartment to discover narcotics inside. 

About an hourafter, one of the men who had been robbed came back to his house and informed police that he had gotten money to purchase a car. He added that the cash was taken away by three men who came into his apartment and tied him and his friend up.  

Police did not say what the robbers looked like. No suspects have been taken into custody.
