Victim killed in mobile home fire

One person died last night when a blaze consumed a house at the El Capitan Mobile Home Park on Madison Avenue in El Cajon, officials reported.

Fire crews arrived at the scene after they got a call from residents informing them there was a smoke coming from the home just a little before 7 p.m., Heartland Fire officials stated. 

Around the same time, El Cajon firefighters from a station close by were also able to see the smoke coming from the home and responded to the house within a matter of three minutes. 

It took 20 firefighters to extinguish the fire in 15 minutes.

Authorities did not reveal the name of the victim killed. They also reported that four pet birds died in the fire. 

The fire damaged about $75,000 worth of possessions.

DUI Prosecution and Awareness Program arrests many

Ten drivers were taken custody and authorities impounded 18 cars while they carried out a  “DUI Saturation Patrol” on Saturday night in Imperial Beach. Five different law enforcers from the area were stopping cars at the checkpoint. 

The checkpoint is part of the DUI Prosecution and Awareness Program which is paid for by the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Authorities took people into custody who were thought to be driving drunk and took away the cars of drivers who were driving without a license. They also caught a minor with alcohol in his car and gave him a citation. 

Saturday’s operation was the end to the first year that the program was in effect. Overall, police have taken 147 people into custody, given out 332 citations and impounded 262 vehicles in the South Bay area. The second year of the program is to start in October.

Scuba diver rescued from ocean after found unconscious

San Diego lifeguards rescued a 60-year-old female scuba diver from the ocean who was discovered stranded and unconscious just off La Jolla Shores yesterday morning, Lt. Andy Lerum reported.

The lifeguards received a signal from other divers who were calling out for their help around  9 a.m. Lifeguards used a rescue boat to bring the woman back to shore just about 200 yards off in the ocean, and they performed CPR on her. 

The diver was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Further details regarding her condition and status at the hospital was not given.

Thieves rob a 7-Eleven of its cash

Two men held up a 7-Eleven store located on Baltimore Drive near Fletcher Parkway around 3 a.m. yesterday, police reported.

The thieves ordered the clerk to hand them the money from the register. They left the crime scene in an early 1990s model Toyota Cressida. No weapons were used or in the theft. 

One robber was said to be a clack man, around 30 to 40 years old, with Afro-style hair and a goatee. He was dressed in a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

The other robber was said to be a Latino man n his late 20’s,  5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds, with a shaved head. He was dressed in a brown shirt and brown pants.

Domestic dispute starts fire in apartment building

Three families were left without a home yesterday after flames took over a two-story apartment building in City Heights that was stated by a domestic disagreement, authorities reported.

San Diego police Lt. Ken Hubbs reported that officers arrived at the scene at 4:43 p.m. after receiving a report regarding a domestic disturbance between a man and woman at the complex located on 44th Street near El Cajon Boulevard.

When officers came to the scene, they could hear the man and woman shouting at each other and also items being thrown within the apartment. During the time the officers were waiting for more officers, the fire was started in the building. 

At first, the man denied the police request to come out of the apartment, even though the building was entirely covered in smoke. He eventually came out and was taken into custody. The woman was not hurt in the incident. 

Authorities were looking into the case further and examining what started the fire, which destroyed three apartments altogether. The American Red Cross was providing the families with shelter for a short while.

Wasps sting group of parents and Cub Scouts on nature walk

A group of Cub Scouts and parents were on a nature walk in Balboa Park when they were swarmed by a large group of wasps on the trail yesterday, just south of Upas Street.

A total of 24 children and adults were stung by the swarm of wasps around 9:50 a.m., some multiple times. Two were transported to the hospital for medical aide, officials reported. 

City officials blocked off the trail and had to go in and get rid of a wasp nest.

Motorcyclist killed on transition ramp

A 19-year-old man from Escondido was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle while traveling around  3 a.m. yesterday and skidded into the middle of oncoming cars. 

The man was traveling on the ramp that connects the eastbound state Route 78 to northbound Interstate 15, the Medical Examiner’s Office stated.

His name remains confidential.

Man killed after pulling over to take pictures on freeway

A man from Encinitas was killed yesterday on state Route 52 after he parked his car and exited the vehicle in order to snap some photos of the hills in Tierrasanta, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

Edward Philip Ward, 84, and his wife had stopped on the side of the road in a dirt median close to the Santo Road exit. Ward walked across the eastbound lanes to get into position to take some pictures and was hit by a car on his way back to the car. He was killed instantly.

Man saved from 70-75 foot fall down cliffs

San Diego lifeguards and firefighters teamed up last night in order to save a man trapped on a cliff located underneath the Torrey Pines Gliderport.

Lifeguard Jeffrey Hatfield reported that it was not clear right away whether the man had fallen down to the cliff or jumped off. Officials received a call from a bystander on the beach around  7 p.m. reporting the incident. The man apparently had fallen 70 to 75 feet, then tumbled down a slope, Hatfield reported.

“He wasn’t alert or oriented when we got him,” Hatfield added.

The man was airlifted and transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

Teen killed in car crash on way home from football game

A teen from Vista county was just taking off from a high school football game when he passed away in a tragic car crash on Friday night, only two days before he was to turn 18-years-old, authorities reported. 

Michael Victor Pyper hung out with the football team on the sidelines for the majority of the night at Rancho Buena Vista High School football game, reported football coach Eric Jorgensen.

Pyper, who had just graduated from the high school, took off when the game was done and was traveling west on Lake Boulevard around 10:25 p.m. and while he was speeding he lost control of his car. The car collided into a group of trees and he was thrown out of the vehicle, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

An estimated 30 former classmates and friends encountered the crash on their way home from the game, Jorgensen stated. 

Pyper was a linebacker on the varsity football team the year before.
