Fire started in attic damages home

 A fire sparked in an attic resulted in an estimated $5,000 damage to a City Heights home Sunday morning, a fire dispatcher reported. 

The fire was extinguished swiftly, but still destroyed about $2,000 worth of personal property at the home located on 42nd Street near Landis Street.

Investigators are currently trying to determine what started the fire, which was called in around 10:45 a.m. No one was said to be hurt in the incident.

Border Patrol confiscates over 6,000 pounds of marijuana

Border authorities reported Sunday that they found and confiscated over 6,000 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $5.9 million and took a truck driver into custody when they discovered the drugs hidden in a boxes filled with door knobs. 

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers took away the drugs around 7 p.m. Friday at the Calexico Port of Entry’s secondary cargo inspection area.

A group of dogs signaled to officers showing that there could possibly be drugs within the 1998 trailer. Officers searched the trailer to discover 458 wrapped packages of marijuana hidden in 67 cardboard boxes.

The driver, said to be a Mexicali male in his 30’s, was taken into custody and handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for them to interrogate him about the situation.

DUI’s add up over the holiday weekend

The California Highway Patrol arrested a total of 94 people in San Diego County under charges of drunken driving and driving under the influence of drugs over the Thanksgiving holiday week, which is an improvement from last year’s 108 arrests, the agency informed Sunday.

People were taken into custody by CHP officers from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Sunday. There was also one accident in which someone died, in comparison to the two that occurred last year.

Across the state, there was a total of 1,314 driver arrests over the holiday weekend, which is a decrease from last year’s 1,397 at the same time. Although there was a drop, 30 people died in accidents as compared to 24 deaths last year, the CHP noted.

Man shot with Taser after police pursuit

 Escondido police officers used a Taser on a man to stop him after a short police pursuit down Interstate 15 Tuesday morning. 

Officers attempted to pull over the driver of the Ford Escort for breaking a moving law around 10:40 a.m. on south I-15 near Deersprings Road, Escondido police Sgt. Ray Fien reported. 

The man denied their request for him to stop driving and sped away, moving in and out of traffic at about 70 mph, Fien stated. 

About 15 minutes after, the car drover over a spike strip set up by officials about a half mile north of Poway Road causing the man to pull over. The driver exited his car and walked swiftly towards officials ready to fight and was hit with the Taser gun, Fien reported. 

The man was transported to a hospital to be checked up on, in line with department policy, before being sent to jail, the sergeant stated.

The fast lane of the highway was closed off while officers examined the scene, but it was reopened around noon, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Three robbers steal from medical marijuana facility

 Police took three people into custody Wednesday under suspicion of armed robbery in an incident at a medical-marijuana business after the three robbers got into a car accident while fleeing the scene.  

A clerk at the facility located on University Avenue near Cartegena Drive was struck in the head with an object at some point in the theft. The robber was called in at 10:11 a.m., stated police Officer Brad Ruff.

The robbers took off in a car and got into a collision on Malcolm Drive near Cartegena. Two people took off running into a  backyard and were intercepted. The third was discovered by police around the area, Ruff added. . 

No other information was released.

Man in wheelchair hit and killed by truck

A man in a wheelchair who died in an accident Tuesday in his attempt to cross the street at night was said to be Hector Villasenor, 60, of Santee, the Sheriff’s Department reported. 

Investigators added that Villasenor was traveling on an electric wheelchair when he went crossed onto Carlton Hills Boulevard around 6 p.m. and went straight into the pathway of an oncoming truck who was heading north. 

The driver of the truck, a 49-year-old man from Lakeside, could not stop in time and hit the wheelchair.

Alcohol is not thought to be involved in the crash and the driver is not being charged at the moment, the Sheriff’s Department stated.

Woman collides into car and light pole on scooter

A woman who died after an accident on her scooter Tuesday has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Deena Mary Davis, 40, of Escondido. 

Davis was traveling north on Autopark Way near Don Lee Place around 5:30 p.m. on her scooter when she seems to have lost control, passed through the traffic lanes and ran into the back of a car and then a light pole, authorities reported. She passed away at a hospital shortly after.

85 pounds of marijuana found at border checkpoint

A U.S. citizen, living in Tijuana, was taken into custody Wednesday after officials at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry discovered 20 packages of marijuana stashed inside two garden-hose reels he was transporting in is truck along with his landscaping tools.

The man pulled up to the border checkpoint around 4 a.m., and a drug-sniffing dog became suspicious of the truck, signaling to officials to come check, reported Angelica De Cima, a spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Officers searched the car to discover the 85 pounds of  marijuana, with a street value of $85,000, stored inside the reels in the bed of his truck.  

The man was taken into custody and sent to stay at the San Diego County jail.

Police tackle suspect after long chase

A man took police on a pursuit around San Diego and National City Wednesday afternoon before abandoning the car and being taken out by officers in the back of a church. 

Police tried to pull over the driver for breaking a driving law on Gamma Street around 3:45 p.m. when he quickly drove away and then headed south on Interstate 805, police reported. The blue Dodge Charger took the National City exit and went zooming through the side streets before re-entering the freeway and traveling north.  

The driver let out a couple of passengers some time throughout the chase and then abandoned the car after. He rook off running into a neighborhood, but officers caught up to him and grabbed him behind a church near the intersection of 8th Street and Euclid Avenue in National City about 10 minutes after. 

Police reported that the driver is on probation, and they searched his home to find gun paraphernalia which he breaks his parole rules.

Main pipe breaks, repairs force businesses to shut down

 A main water line burst Wednesday evening at the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Fanuel Street in Pacific Beach, causing the water to have to be shut off and also the closing of businesses on two blocks while the line could be fixed. 

San Diego police report that four blocks of Garnet Avenue were blocked off in order for city crews to have access to fix the problem. 

The break occurred in a 6-inch cast-iron main, stated Arian Collins, spokesman for the city Water Department. The pipe was planned to be fixed by midnight. The break took place at about 4:45 p.m.

The 1100 and 1200 blocks of Garnet lacked water while the repairs were underway, Collins reported. 

Collins added that the city has not used cast-iron pipes since the early 60s, so the pipe needed to be replaced. 

No flooding occurred.
