Homeless man burned badly
A 29-year-old homeless man seems to have set fire to a 49-year-old homeless man on Wednesday afternoon, Chula Vista police reported.
The victim received second- and third-degree burns covering about a fourth of his body, reported police Lt. Phil Collum said. It was not explicitly stated what provoked the crime that occurred just before 4 p.m. by a grocery store located on 30th Street west of Edgemere Avenue.
Collum reported that the victim seems to have been sleeping or passed out when he caught fire. He was transported to UCSD Medical Center for treatment.
A suspect was taken into custody.
“It’s very unusual,” Collum stated. “I can remember very few (similar) incidents in my career of 15 years.”
