Two house fires ignite on Thursday
Firefighters had their cut out for them when two fires started within two hours of each other in the San Diego area on Thursday afternoon.
The first fire started at a lower level apartment on Guy Street near Crowell Street in Midtown around 3 p.m. when a portable heater lit furniture on fire in a front room, reported San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque.
The two adults living in the apartment were gone at the time, but their two cats were killed in the incident.
The fire resulted in about $125,000 in damage to the building and the possessions inside. No other apartments were affected by the fire.
At 4 p.m., another fire was called in at a two-story home located on 59th Street near Kings View Court in Encanto. No one was inside the home when the fire began.
The fire was ignited in a bedroom and traveled up the walls to the attic, Luque stated. Firefighters extinguished the fire in a matter of 10 minutes.
The rest of the home was damaged by smoke. The source of the fire is still being looked into.
The Red Cross helped the woman and five children who live in the home.
