A juvenile at a county detention facility in Alpine was reported to have tuberculosis, and other detainees and staff are being tested for the disease, county health officials reportedTuesday.

Other detainees may have been infected from between Dec. 1 and Feb. 6 at Camp Barrett, the county’s juvenile detention facility in Alpine, stated Tom Christensen, spokesman for the county’s Health and Human Services Agency.

More information regarding the juvenile who had has the disease was not given.

Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, informed that juveniles who have been allowed to leave the facility, but who were at the facility during the time that the juvenile with tuberculosis was there are being contacted of their potential to have come into contact with the disease.

The majority of people exposed to tuberculosis do not fully develop the disease, Wooten stated.
