“The Long Jaw Bandit” pleads guilty
A man authorities named “The Long Jaw Bandit” entered a guilty plea on Monday to stealing from about three dozen stores within four months in the past year.
Roger Bruce Jones admitted he was guilty on the day he was supposed to have a preliminary hearing take place on the charges. He pleaded guilty to all 34 charges issued against him, and received no plea agreements or sentencing options, Deputy District Attorney Allison Worden reported.
He could potentially be sent to prison for 39 years at most. His sentence is to be determined on May 27.
Police named Jones, 44, the nickname “The Long Jaw Bandit” because of his pronounced, jutting jaw that shows up on surveillance videos at some stores.
Lawyers argue that between the months of August and December, Jones stole from stores in San Diego, National City, La Mesa and El Cajon. In those areas, stores such as Staples, Radio Shack and Rite Aid were robbed. He was taken into custody at the San Ysidro border crossing the day after Christmas.
