Paraglider rescued after striking cliffs

Two paragliders dropped in mid-air by the Torrey Pines Gliderport at about 4:15 p.m., soaring to the ground and resulting in the injury of one individual. 

A lifeguard spokesman reported that one of the paragliders was able to land without an issue at the correct gliderport while the other, a 39-year-old male, smashed into the cliffs.

Rescuers had to scale down the cliffside to make the man ready to be transported by helicopter to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego around 6:15 p.m.

The lifeguard spokesman added that he was in stable condition, but had serious trauma wounds to his shoulder and arm.

Motorcyclist loses control

A 61-year-old man from Ramona who passed away in a tragic accident Thursday when his motorcycle veered off Dos Picos Park Road was identified Saturday as Paul Raymond Farris as reported by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The California Highway Patrol reported that Farris lost control of the motorcycle he was riding when he neared a turn and took it at too high of a speed. He was ejected from the bike and dropped into a line of bushes. 

A couple came across his injured body during their walk. 

In 1995, Farris, who served in the Vietnam war, was sentenced to federal prison when he said that he had built a bomb and implanted it into an electric drill, which was set off and blew off the thumb of a man who he had a fight with. 

He was let go from prison in 2003, the Federal Bureau of Prisons website stated.

Fireworks misshoot and injure three

Three people were injured in a firework mishap at Bradley Park in San Marcos on Sunday, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department reported.

One of the three had to be transported to the hospital for medical aide for severe burns received in the accident. The mishap occurred around 9:20 p.m. during the yearly firework show at the park located on Rancho Santa Fe Road and Linda Vista Drive.

A sheriff’s spokesman reported that fireworks accidentally fired sideways and hit the property of a caretaker in the park.

Building must evacuate after acid spill

The Jewelers Exchange building was evacuated this morning after an employee arriving for work accidentally spilled a one-gallon container of muriatic acid and it burst, city firefighters stated.

The worker’s wife, 60, was transported to a hospital for medical aide after breathing in the fumes, fire spokesman Maurice Luque stated.

About 25 people were in the building during the time that the spill took place in the building lobby around 10:15 a.m. Firefighters escorted the people out of the building by traveling from floor to floor all throughout the eight-story building, located at 6th Avenue and E Street.

A fire hazardous materials team neutralized and cleaned out the acid, which can be used for etching metal. Workers were able to reenter the building at bout noon.

Boy hit above the eye with arrow

A boy was injured while playing with a bow and arrow in Escondido Friday afternoon.

The boy, whose age was unknown, was shooting with an amateur bow and arrow set off San Pasqual Road near Bear Valley Parkway around 3 p.m. when his brother hit him in the head with an arrow, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The boy was injured above his eye, but he is expected to recover.

He was airlifted to a Children’s Hospital.

Driver backs out of driveway, rolling over friend

A truck ran over a man who was lying underneath it in the driveway of a home in Mira Mesa as the driver was attempting to back out of his driveway Wednesday morning. The man was injured in the incident, but is expected to survive.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma reported that he was backing out of his driveway of his home located on Berwyn Road off Reagan Road just before 6 a.m. when he “felt the front wheel jerk,” stated San Diego police Sgt. Jim Reschke.

He kept on reversing until he reached about 12 feet and then noticed the man on the ground and realized it was his friend, Reschke stated.

The 23-year-old victim passed out after drinking too much and fell asleep on the ground, Reschke said. He had been curled up on his side and the front passenger tire rolled over his back and chest, he added.

The man was awake and aware of the incident after it occurred and was transported to a hospital. The severity of his injuries are yet to be determined, police reported.

Child crushed by garbage truck

A 3-year-old boy was crushed by a garbage truck on Friday in a tragic accident, authorities reported.

The boy’s mom was attempting to place the boy and another child into a car in the driveway located on 43rd Street and Newton Avenue in Southcrest,  San Diego Police Lt. Ken Hubbs reported.

The boy made eye contact with his father across the road and took off running towards him.

Hubbs stated that the boy was hit in the street by a blue Allied Waste Services trash track that was moving at a slow pace. A passenger in the truck attempted to stop the driver, the the driver persisted and was unable to stop in time.  The boy went under the vehicle and was crushed by the truck’s back tires. He died instantly at the location.

A San Diego police officer arrived at the scene and was also hurt afterward. The officer was attempting to help the boy when two men approached him, who turned out to be related to the boy.

The officer was socked in the face and knocked out. He was transported to the hospital and received medical aide for a wound on his face.

Police are going to shut down 43rd Street for a few hours while police look into the accident.

Ruptured water pipe results in loss of water supply

A private contractor on a project in Ocean Beach struck a 10-inch water main Monday morning during his work, causing water to flow into a residential neighborhood and stopping the water supply to homes in the area.

The rupture in the pipe was called in by the intersection of Castelar Street and Seaside Street at about 10 a.m. and teams of people have arrived to fix the break, reported city Public Utilities spokesman Arian Collins.

Collins added that he was unsure when the pipe would be finished being fixed or how many customers did not have water.

Woman falls down knocked unconscuous, police investigating

Police report that a 60-year-old woman who was discovered injured on Wednesday morning in her Normal Heights apartment. The woman was hurt after a terrible fall.

Police officers discovered the woman a little before 8:30 a.m. in the Santa Fe Place apartment complex located on 34th Street near El Cajon Boulevard.

The woman was knocked unconscious and showed clear evidence of facial injury. Police originally thought she also head severe head injuries, but that was not true, reported Capt. Lawrence McKinney. They came to determine that the cold temperature of the room influenced the temperature of her body and therefore caused her bruises to seem more serious and drastic than they were, McKinney reported.

Police received a report to come to the complex by the apartment manager after residents asked the manager to see if she was okay. The manager went to check and discovered the door of her apartment was slightly open and the wounded woman was inside, Jarvis said.

Neighbors informed officials they they had heard clanging and loud noises at some point during the night.

McKinney reported that prescription drugs were discovered in the apartment and may have played a serious role in the incident.

“We don’t have any evidence that any crime has been committed,” McKinney stated.

Juvenile said to have TB at detention camp

A juvenile at a county detention facility in Alpine was reported to have tuberculosis, and other detainees and staff are being tested for the disease, county health officials reportedTuesday.

Other detainees may have been infected from between Dec. 1 and Feb. 6 at Camp Barrett, the county’s juvenile detention facility in Alpine, stated Tom Christensen, spokesman for the county’s Health and Human Services Agency.

More information regarding the juvenile who had has the disease was not given.

Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, informed that juveniles who have been allowed to leave the facility, but who were at the facility during the time that the juvenile with tuberculosis was there are being contacted of their potential to have come into contact with the disease.

The majority of people exposed to tuberculosis do not fully develop the disease, Wooten stated.
