High surf prompts many rescues
Strong rip currents resulting from the high surf on Saturday, caught swimmers by surprise and pulled them further into the ocean. Lifeguards had to make multiple rescues on Saturday, San Diego lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma stated.
An estimated 10 people had to be saved from the water as they were unaware of how to make their way out of the rip currents, he stated, but no one was hurt.
Lerma reports that there is to be similar rip currents Sunday, and more people flocking to the beach for spring break . Many people at the beach are not paying attention to the 60-degree water temperature and 3- to 5-foot waves, he stated.
“People are pent up all year, and hey, they are going to go in the water,” Lerma stated.
