Police are looking into a case in which a 9-month-old boy was killed in a bathtub when his father left him and a 2-year-old sibling alone in the bathtub for hours while he took a phone call. 

Police received a call to come to the apartment located on Leslie Road near Chase Avenue at about 6:35 p.m. Tuesday informing them that there was a baby in need of emergency medical attention because he was no longer breathing, reported El Cajon police Lt. Tim Henton.

Paramedics transported the baby to Grossmont Hospital, where he passed away. 

The 26-year-old father put the baby and his sibling in the bathtub and left them alone while he talked on the phone, Henton stated. 

The man reported to police that he only left the bathroom for a mere 10 minutes and then came back into the bathroom every once in a while to check on them from the doorway. When he came back he discovered the baby completely submerged.

Police have not taken any suspects into custody. They are still looking into the incident in order to find out whether child neglect charges should be filed against the father, Henton reported.

Authorities decided to remove the father’s other two children, ages 2 and 5, from his custody and place them in protective care.

The man’s father was also in the home during the time of the incident, but he was not near the bathroom, Henton stated.
