A fire caused $150,000 in damage to a home, forced a resident to the hospital with smoke injuries and resulted in the death of a dog and a cat Monday afternoon, officials reported.

The fire was called in a little after 12:30 p.m. from a one-story home located on Joyce Street near Avocado Avenue.

A man was at home when the fire ignited and he was able to get out in time. He was transported to UCSD Medical Center to receive medical attention for smoke inhalation, stated El Cajon spokeswoman Monica Zech. Firefighters went in the home to grab a dog and a cat but tragically were unable to save them in time. A second cat was not found.

The fire is believed to possibly have been started from a cooking incident, but officials are still looking into the details, Zech added.

Firefighters from the El Cajon and San Miguel fire departments extinguished the fire in under 15 minutes. Two people were left without a home and the Red Cross is going to aide them in finding shelter for the time being, Zech stated.

House bursts into flames, two escape

Posted by Christina on Feb 25 2010 | Fires, House Fires

Two residents within a house that caught on fire Wednesday were able to exit the house in time before the fire engulfed the two homes and a storage garage.

The fire began at about 10:50 a.m. at the home located on Kenwood Drive near Gracia Paseo. Fire investigators reported that the fire resulted in about $350,000 in damage and was ignited by an old electrical wiring in the ceiling.

Terri Talmadge, 45, reported that she was getting out of the shower when she heard noises coming from her roommate’s bedroom.

“All I saw was black smoke at the top of the house,” Talmadge stated.

She added that her sister, Paige, who is also a resident of the home, dialed 911. Talmadge informed officers she only had enough time to pick up her purse before she quickly exited the building covered in flames.

“All this happened so fast. It was like that,” she stated.

Firefighters had the ability to contain the fire and keep it from taking over homes close by. The fire was extinguished at 11:27 a.m., reported Gary Croucher, division chief of the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District.

Croucher also informed that 37 firefighters from San Miguel, La Mesa El Cajon, Lemon Grove and Bonita fire departments arrived at the scene to combat the fire.

The Red Cross is helping people find shelter after the fire struck.

Talmadge stated that she watched over 18 feral cats that lived in the garage and she was not sure how they were affected by the fire. Croucher added that she didn’t think the cats were still alive and didn’t know what had happened to them, but their escape route had been blocked during the fire.
