Inmate escapes from correctional facility

An inmate being held at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility escaped yesterday afternoon while working with a community crew in the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park.

The inmate, Gary Elwood, 19, is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, 230 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. He was jailed on Dec. 8 after he was found guilty of  second-degree burglary and was to be released and put on parole in May 2010.

According to prison officials, the last time they saw him was around 1:35 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol, Sheriff’s Department and Border Patrol are all looking for Elwood.

Man stabbed in gang-related attack

According to authorities, a gang-associated attack on a 22-year-old man left him dead with severe stab wounds on Wednesday night.

Officials discovered the man who was attacked, Donniell Wilkins, in the middle of the driveway of a home located on 13th Street near Fern Avenue around 10:45 p.m., homicide Lt. Dennis Brugos stated.

Wilkins’ body showed evidence that he had been stabbed a minimum of one time and authorities transported him to the hospital where he died later, Brugos reported. 

Wilkins was seen outside the house exchanging dialogue with his friend when two men came out from the alley way and started talking about gang-related information, Brugos stated. 

One the men were approaching, Wilkins approached the men and one of them attacked him and plunged a knife into him at least once. After Wilkins was stabbed he walked back to his friend in the driveway and fell to the floor. 

According to a description, the men were both young Latinos, one with a thin body, a completely shaved head, and tattoos on the arms. The other was on the heavier side. One was seen riding a bicycle.

Police seek information regarding oil dumping

San Diego County Crime Stoppers announced that they will be giving a reward of $1,000 for any beneficial information that would allow them to find the culprit and those guilty of pouring oil on a freeway off-ramp Tuesday afternoon, an incident which resulted in a fatal crash. 

 Jose Ismael Lerma was driving in his Ford Expedition when he hit an oil patch and collided with a trash truck on Federal Boulevard after fishtailing and losing control of the car on the Federal Boulevard off-ramp from eastbound state Route 94.

Lerma, 36, a resident of San Diego, was both a husband and a father. He passed away at the hospital shortly after the incident. There were reports of other cars that hit the oil patch causing them to slide and crash. 

Four 5-gallon buckets of used oil were poured onto the off-ramp at some point before the accident occurred.
