Oil slick stretches across La Jolla ocean
The Coast Guard informed that an oil-slick reached across miles and miles of land from Imperial Beach south into Mexico is now a good portion cleared and its source is still a mystery.
Coast Guard spokesman Bill Burwell said a flyover of the slick Sunday afternoon showed that it had ”pretty much dissipated” from U.S. waters.
The oil slick was called in around 11:30 a.m. Saturday by a recreational boater who said there was an oily covering blanketing the water about six miles off Imperial Beach. The sheen contained the colors of the rainbow, causing him to believe it was a petroleum base less dense than diesel or other fuels.
The oil slick reached about half-mile wide stretching west for 15 miles, then south into Mexican waters.
Burwell reported that the Coast Guard is working alongside Mexican authorities to find the source.
