SeaWorld trainer bit by sea lion during performance

A trainer at SeaWorld had to be taken to the hospital and treated for an animal bite after a sea lion snapped at her in the middle of a show.

The animal bit into the 27-year-old woman on her leg around 4:45 p.m.,  Maurice Luque, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman reported. The woman received small injuries.

Paramedics transported her to a Hillcrest hospital.

SeaWorld spokesman Dave Koontz said the bite was just a “nip.” He added that she was bit during a show involving  people, sea lions and other marine mammals. He reported that the sea lion performances will still go on without disruption, but wanted to assure that the bite incident is a serious matter.

“Anytime there is a situation out of the norm, we always take a look at it to see what might have caused it, and apply it to our training program with the animals to prevent similar problems,” Koontz stated.

Koontz added that the trainer’s wound was treated and she was able to leave the hospital in a stable and healthy condition. The trainer said she is going to come back to work starting today, he stated.
