Train collides into truck on tracks
An accident occurred yesterday morning when a northbound Amtrak train collided into the back of a semi-truck that was straddling the train tracks, authorities reported. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident.
The crash was called in around 7:10 a.m. at Pacific Highway and Washington Street in Middletown, San Diego police stated. The passengers and driver of the truck exited in time and were not hurt when their truck was struck. No one on the train was injured either.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark O’Connor reported that the 3-ton commercial vehicle could not get out of the way in time when the train was coming. The train slowed down and honked at the truck in hopes of avoiding the accident.
“He couldn’t pull forward enough to get out of the way. He was stopped there,” O’Connor added.
Detectives are still looking into the crash for details.
There is a double track in that area and so this did not affect the route of other trains or delay any routes, North County Transit District spokeswoman Sarah Benson stated.
